Definition:

“Terrorism constitutes the illegitimate use of force to achieve a political end.”

The United Nations has condemned terrorist acts using the following description of terrorism.

"Criminal acts intended or calculated to provoke a state of terror in the, general public, a group of persons or particular persons for political purposes are in any circumstance unjustifiable, whatever the considerations of a political, philosophical, ideological, racial, ethnic, religious or any other nature that may be invoked to justify them."

There are almost 109 definitions of terrorism & the only general characteristic generally agreed upon is that terrorism involves violence and the threat of violence.' Terrorism has been practice throughout history and throughout the world Note: "terrorism is a pejorative term. It is a word with intrinsically negative connotations that is generally applied to one s enemies and opponents, or to those with whom one disagrees and would otherwise prefer to ignore (...).

Hence i decision to call someone or label some organization 'terrorists becomes almost unavoidably subjective, depending largely on whether one sympathizes with or opposes the person/group/cause concerned. If one identifies with the victim of the violence, for example, then the act is terrorism. If, however one identifies with the perpetrator, the violent act is regarded in a more sympathetic, if not positive (or, at the worst an ambivalent) light; and it is not terrorism.

History of Terrorism.

Terrorism has been practiced through out the history & through out the world. Its use was openly advocated since ancient times. However, the French Revolution (18th century) provided the first uses of the words "Terrorist" and "Terrorism". Use of the word "terrorism" began in 1795 in reference to the Reign of Terror initiated by the Revolutionary government.

20th Century - The Internationalization of Terror

The age of modern terrorism might be said to have begun in 1968 when the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) hijacked an El Al airliner en route from Tel Aviv to Rome. Another aspect of this internationalization is the cooperation between extremist organizations in conducting terrorist operations. Motives range from the ideological, financial or religious ones.

Current State of Terrorism (21st century)

The largest act of international terrorism occurred on September 11, 2001 in a set of co-ordinates attacks on the United States of America where A.-Qaeda terrorists hijacked civilian airliners and used them to attack the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Other major terrorist attacks have a so occurred in New Delhi (Indian Parliament attacked Bali car, bomb attack; London subway bombings, Madrid train bombings and the most recent attacks in the operational and strategic epicenter of this terrorism is now mostly centered in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
